I take in the dimly lit view and make a few frames of a\u00a0motionless canoe that seems to embody\u00a0the stillness of the place. We\u2019re looking for birds but they\u2019re nowhere to be seen. In fact, we don\u2019t even hear them. This landscape is eerily silent.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7649\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rideintobirdland.com\/2015\/breakfast-in-the-house-of-the-monkey-and-the-puma\/_dsc0285\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7649\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7649\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7649 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rideintobirdland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC0285.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7649\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A canoe rests motionless in Punta Laguna as the sun rises. (Photo \u00a9 Ivan Gabaldon).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The lagoon keeps us under its spell until the sudden sound of shuffling leaves draws our attention to the trees behind us. Something of substantial weight is active up on the canopy, noisily flexing branches and coming closer to us. We catch glimpses of moving shadows through layers of foliage, then a curtain of leaves opens to reveal the face of a Spider Monkey as it pokes its head out and gives us an inquisitive look.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7667\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rideintobirdland.com\/2015\/breakfast-in-the-house-of-the-monkey-and-the-puma\/dsc_5879\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7667\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7667\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7667 size-full\" title=\"The first Spider Monkey we see seems to be scouting the area. (Photo \u00a9 Ivan Gabaldon).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">He\u2019s soon followed by at least twenty more monkeys, a whole group out for a morning stroll in search of sunlight and fruits. Spider Monkeys (<i>Ateles geoffroyi<\/i>) can weigh up to 9 kilograms and are very impressive acrobats. Nature has equipped them well, with mighty arms (which are longer than their lower limbs), hook-like hands specially adapted for hanging from branches and a powerful prehensile tail capable of supporting their full body weight, a very useful fifth limb.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7672\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rideintobirdland.com\/2015\/breakfast-in-the-house-of-the-monkey-and-the-puma\/dsc_6377\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7672\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7672\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7672 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rideintobirdland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC_6377.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7672\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">To all practical effects, Spider Monkeys have five limbs, not four! (Photo \u00a9 Ivan Gabaldon).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">We spring into action, each photographer looking for a better position from where to photograph. We can see male and female adult monkeys, as well as juveniles and mothers with infants. The monkeys stare down on us from their elevated habitat, sometimes straight into our cameras, but once their initial curiosity is satisfied they choose to ignore us and remain focused on their breakfast routine.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7671\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rideintobirdland.com\/2015\/breakfast-in-the-house-of-the-monkey-and-the-puma\/dsc_6342\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7671\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7671\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7671 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rideintobirdland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC_6342.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7671\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A young Spider Monkey travels with ease along the tree tops. (Photo \u00a9 Ivan Gabaldon).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Swinging from tree to tree without much apparent effort, they socialize amongst themselves and generally enjoy life in the forest\u2019s upper level. (Photo \u00a9 Ivan Gabaldon).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">We try to stay with the monkeys, walking first along Punta Laguna\u2019s path towards the main access road, then veering off along a side trail, our camera shutters constantly clicking. They finally head deeper into the forest, way beyond beyond our reach, but we continue to hear them for several minutes.\u00a0Punta Laguna, in Quintana Roo, is known as a great location to observe Spider Monkeys, yet we didn\u2019t anticipate stumbling so effortlessly upon this captivating scene of life in monkey-land. We just happened to be in the right place at the right time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7669\" style=\"width: 475px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rideintobirdland.com\/2015\/breakfast-in-the-house-of-the-monkey-and-the-puma\/dsc_6058\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7669\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7669\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7669 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rideintobirdland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC_6058.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7669\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The quest for fruit is relentless. (Photo \u00a9 Ivan Gabaldon).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It all seemed to happen very fast but the meta-data in my images tells me I photographed my first monkey at 6:13 and the last one at 8:22, which means we had roughly two hours of beautiful morning light to capture these wonderful creatures in action. It truly was\u00a0a photographer\u2019s delight and a wonderful opportunity to witness and document the natural behavior of a charismatic species currently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/details\/2279\/0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">listed by CITES as endangered<\/a>, victims of an\u00a0ongoing loss\u00a0of their natural habitat. (Photo Ivan Gabaldon).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b><i>Beyond Spider Monkeys and the blue lagoon.\u00a0<\/i><\/b>As memorable as our encounter with the monkeys has been, our visit today has higher goals and we must keep moving. Our group of four photographers (Cherie Pitillo, Carlos Ricalde, Marigel Campos and myself) is here by initiative of <a title=\"Pronatura Peninsula de Yucatan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pronatura-ppy.org.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pronatura Peninsula de Yucatan<\/a> with a mission to photograph nature, people and everyday activities in <i>Campamento Hidalgo<\/i> and <i>Cort\u00e9s<\/i>, two communities located on the way to Punta Laguna and within the zone of influence of &#8220;<em>The house of the monkey and the puma<\/em>\u201d <span class=\"Apple-style-span\">(<em>Otoch Ma\u2019ax Yetel Kooh<\/em> in Maya)<\/span>, an <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.inecc.gob.mx\/publicaciones\/download\/562.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">officially designated<\/a> &#8220;Area for the Protection of Flora and Fauna&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7663\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rideintobirdland.com\/2015\/breakfast-in-the-house-of-the-monkey-and-the-puma\/dsc_5779_hdr\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7663\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7663\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7663 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rideintobirdland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC_5779_HDR.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7663\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A child walks by the &#8220;comisar\u00eda&#8221; in Miguel Hidalgo. (Photo \u00a9 Ivan Gabaldon).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Punta Laguna\u2019s beauty and its proximity to the Cob\u00e1 archeological site have\u00a0made it an attractive stop for tours\u00a0going to or coming from that ancient Maya city, as well as for independent travelers who are\u00a0lured here by the lagoon\u2019s fabled colors and the area\u2019s potential for nature observation. The resulting flow of tourists has created money-making opportunities for the local communities, which they have been quick to seize by offering \u201cnature rides\u201d that include a zip-line experience through the forest and over the lagoon, a short rapelling descent into a cave with subsequent on-foot exploration, and canoe paddling on the lagoon\u2019s shallow waters. (Photo \u00a9 Ivan Gabaldon).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a title=\"Pronatura Peninsula de Yucatan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pronatura-ppy.org.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pronatura Peninsula de Yucatan<\/a> is also working in a joint effort with the <a title=\"Fundaci\u00f3n ADO\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionado.org.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ADO Foundation<\/a>\u00a0to help empower local girls and women so they too can tap into this new sources of income. (Photo \u00a9 Ivan Gabaldon).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The communal store they initially sold\u00a0their wares from was\u00a0too removed from the main road to attract enough potential customers, so PPY has helped coordinate efforts to erect a new space, now much closer to the road and therefore more enticing to buses and cars driving through the village. A farmer gives us a full tour of his\u00a0<em>milpa,<\/em> a\u00a0carefully tended patch of land where he grows a variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers. I\u2019ve never seen farming like this before, using every available pocket of good soil in what is\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">predominantly rocky\u00a0<\/span>terrain. They show us the bee colonies, which are currently recuperating from a population drop, and lend me protective gear so I can approach to\u00a0photograph them. As we prepare to depart, a large bus stops to\u00a0unload a large group of european visitors.
